Don’t be an asshole.

I have been at a pretty low point in my life lately. About a month ago, I was fired from my job. I was called up on a day off and told by my boss that, “it isn’t working out,” and that she would, “have to let [me] go.” I did not do anything wrong. I did not break any rules or steal anything. Nevertheless, I was not provided the courtesy of two weeks notice. Later that evening, I was dumped by the guy I had been seeing for about two months (not relevant to this post, but it sets the tone).

Since then, it has been a struggle. I have had problems collecting un-employment. My mother is under the impression that my boss is fighting my claim. I have cashed in all but my last few savings bonds as a means of income. I have applied for 25+ jobs in interior design and retail, and even at a few fitness centers. I’ve received 5 rejection letters and had 2 interviews—both potential employers passed me up for someone with more experience.

For the better part of the first month, I remained positive and optimistic, however, having recently passed the official one month marker I find that outlook to be more and more difficult to maintain.

Recently I was chatting with a friend on facebook. I confessed to him all of my frustrations with my situation. How horrible a person my former employer is, how difficult it is to find work in a creative field without a strong network of professional contacts, how employers seem to overlook talent in favor of experience, etc. He suggested:

Well by all means, rage against the machine. Or deal with it and get out there and network

After some side eye action, I did a google search. After it confirmed my suspicions that all/most design networking organizations require a yearly membership fee of several hundred dollars, I relayed the information. I received the following response:

Listen, if you’re going to just bitch and moan, have at it. I’m just trying to help.

That brings me to my point: don’t be an asshole. Do not do what my friend did. Sometimes we just need to let out our frustrations. It is our job as friends to be there for each other, and listen to each other’s bitching when we can’t hold in our emotion any longer. Be a friend, and be there for them. You cannot preach positivity with negative comments.

And while we are on the subject, do not preach at all. If you feel that you need to steer them in a positive direction, start by acknowledging the suckage first. Nothing is more annoying than positivity when you are feeling miserable. Commiserate for a minute before force feeding them sunshine and unicorns.
